Same problem here while trying to install a driver for Brother HL-1440 in W10 64-bit version. I tried the approaches mentioned above in this thread, no ”Microsoft - Printer I 6/21/2006” show up in advanced opion including other drivers. Using Microsoft Update Catalog, I cannot find a version that includes valid drivers for this model, only some Lexmark models show up after expanding the .cab file and using the ”have disk” option. Is it possible to be more specific about the exact version to use? I have tried dozens of sub-versions without success, all with the same name Microsoft - Printer 6/21/2006.
Also tried the driver for HL-1210W as suggested above but it did not work, resulted in no printing and an error was mentioned without further details.
The printer has been used as a network printer all years, using a HP JetDirect 300x interface. Just to rule out that as a potential problem I also tried to connect it directly to the W10 machine through USB but it is not recognized and it does not show up in the device manager.
It is really strange to have such problems with a seemingly super simple task… this printer installs and works fine on all other machines we have; Mac OSX in all versions over the years, various Linux distros, older Windows versions up to and including my wife’s Windows 10 installation - an earlier version, I recall no installation problems maybe a year ago and on another W10 machine some years further back.
Only ”solution” I have right now for printing from my Win 10 machine is to have CentOS 8 running in a VirtualBox and use the printer through CUPS, installed perfectly as network printer with the correct driver supplied by Brother. Not very practical as you can imagine but works as a temporary fix.
I refuse to replace this great printer, period.
