Hi,

(source: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...r/9e91c7d6-dcfd-4383-9b8c-2658aa4f9292?page=5)

the instalation get stuck about 80% and after time crashed again

Hi refuse,

open Control Panel > Troubleshooting > View all > Windows Update and run the troubleshooter and see if that fixes the problem.

I have tried EVERYTHING but cannot upgrade to 20H2. No error code, just ran the update and I am still in version 1909 after the program finish.

A Desktop computer does have a battery, usually about the size of a US quarter in a socket on the motherboard. It's got a couple of terms, RTC/Real Time Clock, CMOS/Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor and BIOS/Basic Input Output System. It maintains the user's settings in the BIOS and usually lasts a few years, most are a CR-2032. A clue to whether it's working is to shut the computer down and pull the power cord out during you're normal sleep time then later plug it back in and start up. If the battery is weak or bad there's usually a prompt and one thing that gets lost is the current date and time that will need setting. The Operating System reads the BIOS to determine what resources are available for running.

I don't think that battery is the problem. The computer is only one year old and I have never changed any battery on a motherboard.

-Update don't find and suggest the update to 20H2 any longer.
-Using the update assistant it just pass the process, get stuck on the above mentioned loop from the log-file for 15-20 minutes, and exit without any update or message. There are also some Telemetry warnings in the log-file.
-If I use an iso-file update I get the message error-0xc1900101-0x20017 fail with SAFE_OS in BOOT. I have tried all suggestions in the following link without result.

I have two partitions, one c: for system and d: for data and so far I have only erased all personal files and data on c: while updating as suggested by the update assistant.

5 days and long nights, and I have a very clean desktop but an old version of W10.

I had this exact same issue with the Win 10 Upgrade Assistant would slowly go to 99% and sit there and never actually kick off the upgrade from 2004 to 20H2. The upgrader_default.log was full of the same messages as Refuse posted at the top. After trying and failing 3 or 4 times with reboots in between I tried the steps in this MS article https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...ck-at-99-861fd3a5-1b9a-35b5-4e5e-a502cfd65dc8.

This kicks off the upgrade process with the bits already downloaded by the upgrade assistant. It worked fine and after install the upgrade and then cumulative updated I was done after ~3 hours.

Hope it works for you.

Tanks all. After a couple of clean install I probably messed up and finally I couldn't even boot up. I found a good solution. I handed it in to a professional fixer and said I wanted to pick it up with 20H2 installed. Waiting for his call tomorrow.

Download and install from the Microsoft website, it doesn’t from settings>updates. In effect, what this download does is completely reinstall W10.

Farmerfred. That was one of my tested methods.

My professional fixer (PC Repair Shop) claimed defect BIOS (!?). Repair and install of W10 20H2 will cost SEK 800 ($90 ,€75). I am waiting for a message that the computer is fixed, if no further obstacles appear.

I have a complete backup of my files but if I wanted recovery of private files SEK 400 would have been added.

As a ‘professional’ your fixer should know better, a shame that you did not try the download through the Microsoft website first, perhaps you should point out to him that that should have been the first thing to try, if he does tell you that the BIOS has been replaced I would ask to see the evidence of that before you part with any money. In my experience there are many PC doctors that are only too eager to rip you off!

I am sorry if you misunderstood me but I did download direct from Microsoft several times. I tried everything for several days including recovery units, iso-file on USB etc. I was also into BIOS to check boot sequence. I think the cause of the final breakdown was my impatience and I interrupted processes when I understood it would not help.

Now I got a message that the computer was ready to be picked up. Let's see what I will get back.

My apologies. When I first attempted to download from settings>updates I also interrupted the download, restarted my PC when the download hung on 84% for over an hour but it did not affect anything. On the second and 3rd attempt it got to 73% and a message came up ‘something went wrong, please try again’ it was at that point I gave up and managed to download and install successfully from Microsoft downloads on the website.
It will be interesting to know what you get back.

For the first time in a week I am sitting behind my desktop copying files back from my backup. Excellent condition of my PC. 20H2 installed and I have also made some new required updates. If I knew then what I know now I would have left the computer with the repair guy when I read the first error message from update: "Update to 20H2 failed". Even as a self taught computer guy, now retired, I have to give in for the more complicated processes and technology nowadays.

When I started with computers I was amazed when I programmed some lines in Basic and my name was written endlessly to the left on the black and white screen. If I added a semicolon after the command line my name filled the screen and with one more command I could make it write my name only 15 or 25 times. This was the prehistoric dos-age.

We won’t know until he replies, that’s unless his PC doctor has trashed it in trying to do whatever he thought it needed!
