Windows 10 Desktop Inactive

I had an HP laptop Windows 7. With it being upgraded to Windows 10 my desktop became inactive. I could not longer post icons and most importantly I could never locate the Recycle Bin, even though I made many efforts to do so. I would be to receive instructions which are not too difficult to follow.

What is the current state of your laptop?

Did you use the recovery software to return it to Windows 7?

Or are you still on an older version of Windows 10?

Model of the laptop would be helpful too.
