Can I activate Windows 7 online using the Windows 10 activation key?

I wouldn't know, but if I was to ponder a guess. I would say no, because the keys I've seen even from upgrades are different.

Hi Robert,
when you installed W10, did you already have W7 installed?, if you did and you do a fresh install of W10, at the point of install where it asks for the license key, click on "I don't have a key" and W10 will automaticaly activate itself after the installation is complete!.
