Win10 Update issues - a little worrisome

ok - so today - and I admittedly forced the issue a little - but I sat through an update from build 10240 to 10535 or whatever .. and this took more than an hour .. so .. what gives Microsoft a) the right to clog bandwidth whenever they feel like it (like a zillion app companies that feel they need to update their app 3 and 4 times a week) b) cause me to lose an hour plus out of my workday ... if there is an update only a restart away - any number of issues during the day can cause me to need to re-start a computer - and what - then I need to wait while this thing updates .. what's that about???
