OS - MS Win 10 Home, Version 10.0.10240 Build 10240
Equip Acer R3-131T, w/ 2GB physical RAM, 4.44 virtual memory & 32 GB SSD (Drive: C)

Trying to install UPDATE called:
"Upgrade to Win 10 Home, ver 1511, 10586"
But get message that Windows needs more space. Dialoge box gives option to use "Disk Cleanup" to free up space
OR "Choose another drive or attach an external drive w/ 10.0 GB available".

Disk Cleanup does not give any thing close to enough space & when attach USB thumb drive w/ more than 10GB free space,
then suddenly it says C drive still needs 3.65 GB.

IF had realized how small SSD was.... but was interested in Acer's nice sharp touch screen & light weight.

Hi Abba,

To free up some more space you could type Programs and Features in your search bar then press Enter key
  • In the window that opens select applications you can live without for now and click Uninstall

These can be reinstalled later once you get the new build of Windows 10 installed.

Language Packs take up a fair amount of space. If you have more than one installed you could consider uninstalling one of them. Make sure though you leave one language pack installed otherwise you won't be able to view much.

To uninstall a language pack:
  • Press Winkey + X or with mouse right-click Start
  • Press A or with mouse click Command Prompt (Admin)
This opens the Administrator: Command Prompt console to: C:\WINDOWS\System32>
  • At this prompt type or copy & paste the following command:

    LPKSETUP /U
  • Press Enter key to execute the above command
  • A new window will pop up. Select the language pack you want to uninstall then click Next
  • Once done return to the Administrator: Command Prompt console, type exit | press Enter to close the console
Once Windows 10 build 10586 has installed it will create two System folders (hidden by default) on your computer in your root directory. Assuming Windows is installed on the C-drive, then the root directory is C:\
  • $Windows.~BT
  • $Windows.~WS
To view these two folders:
  • Open File Explorer
  • Click the View tab | then place checkmark next to Hidden item
These take up quite a lot of space but will automatically delete 30 days after you install the new build. They are there to give you the opportunity to roll back to the previous build of Windows 10 making use of the Windows.old file also created during an upgrade. If you really want to you can manually delete these folders by right-clicking and choosing delete, but should you do that you will no longer be able to roll back to a previous build.

If you still have insufficient space, then if your computer allows it you could connect an external USB Drive to your computer. It needs to be at a minimum 8GB, but in reality you'd be wiser to use a 16GB or greater device.

By connecting such a device during the installation of Windows 10 the Windows.old file ought to be created on the external drive, thus minimizing the risk of getting the alert regarding not enough space.

You are correct in that a 32 GB drive is going to be problematic. Is there an option to replace it with a larger one?

The update needs room for the image which is the 3.65 GB it refers to plus room for archiving your current install.

If you have an external drive or possibly another local drive available the update may be able to use that for some extra space.. If you had the items referred to by Regedit32 it might help.
