I have just bought an Acer Aspire E15 running Windows 10. I cannot find a way to place a webcam icon on the desktop. I had upgraded my previous laptop to W10 from W7 so am fairly familiar with it, but this one seems quite different. I've looked in Ctrl Panel/Device Manager/Imaging Devices and it is listed as HD Webcam and is working properly.

With laptops and tablets....there is no webcam icon like you would have if you went out and purchased one for a desktop. This is because it's a separate piece of hardware. There's just no icon for laptops and tablets.

Have you checked your "All Apps" menu and looked for software that Acer bundled with the computer that might support your integrated WebCam. They used to include Crystal Eye with their older laptops, I don't know what they might be calling it now but I would expect they have something included that would let you adjust the settings and perhaps further calibrate it.
IF nothing else, maybe fire up Skype and see if it uses the webcam.

Thanks guys. Yes, Skype does use the webcam but it seems a bit cumbersome to have to fire up Skype everytime I want to open the webcam. I'll have a look in "All Apps" and see what I can find there. I'm finding this new W10 very confusing all round.

Not that I use the integrated web cam on my Laptop. However I was curious and I went looking for it after your post on the camera icon.
This is what I found. Go to start>All apps>Camera it will open a blank Picture frame, Click on the 3 horizontal dots in the top right corner, this will take you to camera settings which are all turned off by default. From there you can now set the camera settings as you desire, Shutter, Frame, Flicker...Exit the set-up frame go back to All apps and click on the camera icon again it will activate the web cam. You have a choice also to pin icon to start or Task Bar.
I Hope this is what you were looking for.

Previous to Windows 8. The companies that manufactured the cameras provided software to use the camera like to do stills or video. Now with Windows 10 the Camera app is built into Windows 10. Plus you can download apps fro the Windows store. The have apps that you can do things with like add backgrouds and otehr things or just apps that take stills and video.

The camera app should be in all apps in the C's and named camera. You can paste it to the taskbar to give easier access.

You can also type camera into the Cortana search and then click on the app when it comes up.
