Upgrading Lumina to Windows 10

Windows 10 Technical Preview currently works with the following phones:

• Lumia 630
• Lumia 635
• Lumia 636
• Lumia 638
• Lumia 730
• Lumia 830

Is the Insider Preview the only option to upgrade to Windows 10? Windows 10 is not showing for an update and I don't want to join the Insider Preview.

Oh and my Lumina 635 with Windows 8.1 is locked to AT&T, if that makes any difference.

Can someone bring me up to speed with Win10 Mobile? Windows 10 did release a final to mobile didn't they?

For the time being, the insider program is the only pathway to Windows 10 mobile for a Windows 8.1 phone.
No Windows 10 mobile has not been officially released yet. At least not to or through carriers.
Microsoft released two lumia phones with 10 on them (build 10240) the 950 via ATT and their MS Store and the 950 XL only through their MS Store.
There are a couple other Windows 10 phones avialable, I just bought a new Tmobile Alcatel Fierce XL with Windows 10 build 10586 on it.
You might get a better idea from ATT for your 635 as to when then intend to provide an OTA update for that phone. Generally they can provide a rollout date for any firmware and software that they may have scheduled.

Thanks Trouble, I haven't been following the mobile edition. To be honest I didn't want a Windows phone, but I have one anyway. Seemed to have been the cheapest replacement at $35, for a 2G phone that AT&T is phasing out.

I have a 520 and have read on numerous forums about folks upgrading to 10 on them via insiders and now they are doorstops..would never put 10 on my phone for any reason..8.1 is painful enough

I use my old Lumia 810 as the sacrificial lamb.
It was brought out a few years ago by Tmobile as a Windows 8 phone and promptly abandoned.
The firmware was never upgraded to even support Windows 8.1 but through the Windows 8.1 Developers Preview I managed to get it to run 8.1, which ran incrediably well.
Then the insider preview app to upgrade it to Windows 10 Insider Preview.
That has been a bit more painful over the many Windows 10 mobile preview upgrades, occasionally forcing me to go all the way back to 8 and the to 8.1 and then to the latest insider preview, but....
It is currently running 10586.107 flawlessly. Not sure what I'll end up with, when it's all said and done but has been an interesting experiment.
Both my 521 phones are still on 8.1.
My wife refuses to part with her's and mine has been relagated to the shelf as an emergency backup.

I am thinking off buying a windows phone and was wondering if they update like a computer or can you set it to only update over WI FI as I only have a 1 gig allowance with my carrier but have 25 gig allowance through my home WI FI setup

You can set data to use WiFi only or both WiFi and Cellular.

Some rumors today about another Cumulative Update for Windows 10 mobile being tested internally by MS in preparation for release to Insiders
From 10586.107 to 10586.122
Supposedly they are getting close to a final release of Windows 10 Mobile, but....
Then, we've been hearing that for a while now.
AND
You would have to ignore the other rumors that they are testing yet another Cumulative Update internally that may supercede 10586.122

I have a Lumia 640 and to update it needs 1.16 GB of space, I cannot achieve this much space, over 3 GB issystem and cannot come off and1.59 GB is apps that Microsoft will not let me, even temporarily remove, so I am stuck with no space to download updates !

Does your Lumina 640 have a microSD card slot? My Lumina 635 has a MicroSD card and I have the option to move apps to the card. Though I haven't tried to see if they would actually move. It's worth a try especially if you are not currently using the slot. It would give you additional storage regardless.

I have successfully upgraded my AT&T Nokia Lumia 925 to Windows 10 release build 10.0.10586.164 which is currently the final release as of the week of March 8th.
I was Leary of Windows Insider but I was more tired of waiting.

I am so glad I upgraded. Windows Insider is so easy to enroll in and so easy to leave. My Windows AT&T Lumia 925 will now receive updates to Windows 10 as a stand alone entity as long as Windows version is 10.0.10586.*** is installed. My Windows phone version is 10.0.10586.164 the exact same version that is on My PC Windows 10 version 10.0.10586.164 March 23, 2016.

The list has grown. However while waiting for Windows 10 to publicly release for my model, I've come to the conclusion my phone will not support Windows 10. My Lumia 635 only has 512MB memory. The specifically state the 6xx models need 1GB of memory. I assume all the other models have more than 512MB of memory which allow them to work with Windows 10.
