Upgrade from 8.1 stuck on "checking updates"

Upgrade from 8.1 to 10 seems to be going OK, (on almost new laptop), until screen appears "checking updates".
After over two hours I gave up, and retried following day - same result !

Not sure but if you are relying on a USB wireless dongle then you might try removing that from the mix and see if you can complete the upgrade.
Several people have found that extraneous USB dongles of assorted types have interferred with their upgrades / installs (USB Wireless network adapters, USB wireless dongles that support wireless keyboards and or mice / bluetooth, IR, RF, etc., ) and that disconnecting these devices allowed them to finish the upgrade.
