Hi, can someone help please.
A few times a week, on powering up my pc, a big 'stain' appears on my monitor. It's on the bottom of the screen right in the middle and goes up about half way on the screen. It's like a giant 'thumb' print.

I get rid of it by doing a system restore back to the day it does not appear.

Can anyone advise please ?
Cheers.
Tom.

Hi Tom,

a list of your hardware including GPU would also possibly help!. :)

Hi Wolfie, here are a couple of pictures of that stain/shadow.

All the hardware I use is a printer and modem. The modem is in use for almost 2 years and the printer is connected for about 3 years. The stain/shadow started to appear about 2 months and now appears about 3 times a week.

I am not familiar with the GPU, can you explain where I might find it and exactly what you are looking for, please
Cheers.
Tom.

It looks like the screen’s backlight has failed at the bottom. Is there another external monitor or TV to which you can connect the PC to see if the problem is still there?

I agree with Bastet. It sure looks like that your LED's in the monitor are giving out (this is my bread and butter, I fix those for a living). Since most Monitors and nowadays even more TV's have edge lit LED and not back lit LED I'd say two of the four groups you have a dying. Depending on the monitor you may be able to get them, however replacing them is not as easy as they have to be exactly in the same place or the optical geometry is off resulting in dark areas. BTDT.

If another monitor works fine you have your solution. It may be better just to replace the old monitor (I am guessing that one is at least 4,5 years or older?)

Hi Tom,

if you open Control Panel > Device manager, it will show you all your hardware, just look down the list and click on things to expand the items for more info. :)
