After some browsing, I leave for 20 minutes or so. When I return the screen is on but I need to enter my password again.
In sign in options, I chose Never for having to re-enter my password. I'm not too swift on some things but I think I did this
correctly. I only want to enter password after hibernate or starting up from shut down.

In sign in options - -'if you have been away ,when should Windows want you to sign in again?'
I chose NEVER. Is that not sufficient?

It wouldn't hurt to check the Control Panel, Power, Advanced Power Settings as Gideon has recommended just to see if those settings are proper for your needs.

Right click the start button and choose Control Panel from the context menu.
Top right corner of control panel, change the View by: drop down to small icons
Click the Power Options icon
Click the link that says "Change plan settings" next to your selected plan
Click the link that says "Change advanced power settings"
Please use the native windows snipping tool to take a snip of the advanced settings window and attach it to your next post as I have above.

Trouble, I have followed your instructions and saved settings but still need to sign in.
I don't know how to snip but certain I have done all correctly. Certainly more hoops to go thru than Windows 7.
I will wait until I have hands-on help to resolve. Thanks everyone.

Are you having to sign in as your local account or your Microsoft account?...I wonder if that would make a difference?

I still have no resolution of not wanting to sign in . Would this be a Microsoft issue or my internet provider
in case I decide to contact them? Thanks

I think I have resolved my problem. I checked Screensaver which was set to come on in 15 minutes with a check mark
in: On resume, display log on screen
I changed to Never for screensaver to come on and removed check mark for log in. I can also close to main desktop page and return to mail or internet without sign in.
It has been fine for over 1 hour. So, Have I done the right thing here and was it a logical step that I never considered
before launching this thread? Thanks! My laptop is always plugged in
