"Read Only" problem

I created a desktop folder that I want to be writable. I intend to use this as a location for certain back-up files. I right-clicked to folder properties and found that the "read only" box is checked. After unchecking box and hitting "Apply", I close the window. When I reopen properties, the "read only" box is checked again. Any folder that I've found that is checked "read only" is behaving this way. Has anyone found a solution?

But can you actually store files or copy files to that Folder? I've seen the same and it didn't seem to be a problem. But then maybe a security setting is the problem in blocking usage of the Folder?

Every folder on the desktop is by default checked [read only] yet you still can move files/folder into it without problems. What I think is this: since the desktop is actually a folder managed by the system so every new [sub] folder on the desktop inherits the same rights.
Someone may correct me if I am wrong with my thesis...

Thanks for the reply. I'm using this folder for a back-up file location for a particular cad program. In the program input area, when I enter this read-only file's path, the program rejects it as unable to write to. It's still a mystery! By the way, this folder is for "Automatic Backups", so the program places the file there. I can manually place files in, but that's not how it's to be used.

Thanks. I can place files into this folder as normal. I want to use this folder as a location for automatic backups that are created for a specific Cad program. The program won't accept the "read-only" status.

The location of the Folder on the Desktop may be the issue. I recall some years back that programs such as graphics editors needed a specific location for the 'scratch' Folder and the Desktop couldn't be used but any other Folder could be such as on C:\. There also was some talk back a ways that storing everything on the Desktop got messy, a few versions back Windows saved downloads to the Desktop, maybe that's the way it is being kept cleaner.

Thanks. I get the same results if I create a folder in My Documents. It's read-only no matter what I do.
