re-ordering of desktop shortcuts

Has anyone else noticed that their shortcuts on the desktop gets rearanched from time to time for no apperant reason? When I had last shutdown, I had a shortcut to Firefox and Excel located just below the "Recycle Bin" which is the second icon down on the left hand side of the screen below the icon for "My Computer".

When I next turned on my computer the shortcut icons had changed order with the shortcut to Excel at the top, followed by "My Computer", Firefox and "Recycle Bin".

Is there a setting in the registry somewhere that preserves the order of the icons?

By default, they are arranged alphabetically.
If you try without mod, to rearrange them, the next boot will put them back in that order.
Right click the desktop and select "View"

In the drop down, UNselect "Auto arrange Icons". This may help.
