I am having problems with my external USB hard drive. It's several years old, a LaCie Rugged 500 GB USB 2.0 drive.that I use for backups. The problem started off by telling me the drive wasn't accessible. At I loss, I finally wound up formatting the drive. Then the backup cratered at 95% with the same inaccessible message. Any attempt to format or chkdsk the drive winds up with the system going into a tight loop and no software will respond until I disconnect the external drive. Anyone else having similar problems?

I have been having similar hiccups with an older USB external.
I think the problem is with the USB drivers, not the HD.
The simple solution, although not satisfactory, is, when it happens unplug the USB, wait a couple of seconds and reconnect.
