Hi Michael,
You may be able to resolve this particular error by renaming a DLL the program loads as part of its Windows Genuine Advantage protocols from its original intended OS platform, Windows XP.
To do this you will need to do the following:
- Press Winkey + X key | then select Command Prompt (Admin)
- You should now see the prompt: C:\WINDOWS\System32>
- At this prompt type the following, or copy and paste if you prefer:
- rename LegitCheckControl.dll LegitCheckControl.TemporarilyDisable.dll
- Once typed or pasted in, press your Enter key
- If command executes successfully the command prompt will return to C:\WINDOWS\system32>
- Close the Command Prompt
note: You can repeat procedure to rename that DLL back to its original name later if needed, so make a note of what you did and its original name.
If all goes well your Photo Story 3 for Windows will work now.
If for some reason it does not work you may need to uninstall, then reinstall the program. In that scenario you will want to do this using a command line prompt:
- So you would open the Command Prompt (Admin) as you did above
- Type or copy & paste the following, then press Enter key
- msiexec.exe /i Pstory.msi /passive SKIPOSCHECK=1 NOLEGITCHECK=1
- Note: You may need to execute this command from the folder the installer file is in, so for example if your login name is Michael, and the installer is in your downloads folder you would first type this at the command prompt, then press Enter:
- cd c:\users\michael\downloads
- You'd then see a new prompt: C:\Users\Michael\Downloads> and at this prompt you'd execute the above msiexec command
- Once installed you will need to use File Explorer to go to the install folder, which will most likely be:
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Photo Story 3 for Windows
- Inside that folder Right click the executable that opens Photo Story and select Properties
- Next select the Compatibility tab
- Next click Run compatibility troubleshooter
- A window will appear and when trouble shoot is complete you will need to click the link: ''Try recommended settings", then click the button Test the program
- If it works then apply accept changes.
- Note: Under the properties window for your file it may also help to checkmark the Run as administrator option
Well that for now is all I can think of regarding your issue. Hopefully the first step of renaming that DLL will work and you can avoid the second option of a reinstall.
Let us know how you go.
