What printer is it?
If it is HP. Do you have HP's latest driver package Have you tried the HP AIO Printer Remote? Free from the store.
If it is Canon try Vuescan free version

YOu might give the HP Print Scan Doctor a try and see if that helps with anything

It helped me once or twice before I switch back to Epson from HP.

Yes run that but first of all did you use the disc that came with the printer/scanner to make sure all the software had been installed.
I have 2 HP Printers one as above and also an Envy 4500 series
