Partially starting on it's own

I have a problem where if I shut down properly, (not sleep, re-start or any other such incomplete close down) then during the night my computer will apparently attempt to start itself but it sticks with just the window icon on the screen. It is frozen at this point and I have to crash the computer before I can start it properly. I have to resort to crashing the system instead of shutting down to prevent this happening each night. Any ideas what's going on?
This on a HP Pavillion PC about 5yrs old

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Sounds like a power scheme issue.
Try switching to the high performance windows power plan and then adjust everything to prevent anything that might be associated with energy savings. Like this......

Run it like that for a day or two and see if the problem persists.
IF not then you can go back and set things experimentally to see what might be causing the issue.
Perhaps wake timers?
