Normal shut down fails to shut down and keeps running

Recently this happened when trying to shut down and the little row of dots running around in a circle just kept on going round telling me it was shutting down but it wasn't , also I noticed the start sequence had become much slower than normal recentally. All I could do was hold the power button down until that shut off the computer.
Thankfully the Trouble shooter in the Control Panel saved me a lot of searching through forums looking for someone who may have encountered this problem. Clicking on find and fix faults with the computer set the machine off on the search and repair task, all I did was sit and wait and withing a few minutes things were back to normal.

I don't think so, it never showed the usual message of downloading updates, but it did say it had repaired/reset/adjusted settings in my computer.
