Monitor unable to run at optimal screen resolution

I have just upgrade to windows 10 and everything looked like it was the wrong size on my monitor. My monitor had been running on windows 8 with a screen resolution of 1600x900, but, now that I have windows 10, the recommended resolution is 1024x768 and the highest resolution I can go is 1280x1024. Is there any way to fix it this and change it back to a resolution of 1600x900?
