I just purchased a new laptop with Windoxs 10 Pro installed. As I waded though the setup, I realized that I had misspelled my name. Can I edit this?

Hi Rich,

Welcome to the forum.

As you have Windows 10 Professional there are a couple of ways you can do this.
  • Right-click on Start then left-click on Run
  • In the run dialog type lusrmgr.msc then click OK
  • In the window that opens in the left pane click on Users folder
  • Now in the middle pane you can right-click on the username you wish to change and select rename
  • Enter the new name you wish and apply changes

Alternatively you can use your Local Group Policy Editor:
  • Right-click on Start then left-click on Run
  • In the run dialog type gpedit.msc then click OK
  • In the window that opens in the left pane expand to following location:

Computer Configuration
> Windows Settings
> Security Settings
> Local Policies
> Security Options

  • Left-click on Security Options to view its contents in the right pane
  • You will see a couple of options there:
    • Account: Rename administrator account
    • Accounts: Rename guest account

Left-click the one applicable to your case then in window that opens enter the name you want.

      Click OK when done.

Regards,

I could easily do this on 7, but I have 10 and I can't find Start. Do I have to download something to get a traditional Desktop?

Start is the windows icon in lower left corner on your Task bar.

If for some reason you cannot see the taskbar you can also press the winkey + R together to open the Run dialog. The winkey has the windows logo on it and is typically located on the keys in lower left area of keyboard between CTRL and ALT keys.

Got It!!! Thanks for your help. I am up to five hours setting up this new PC so it is ready to go to work. If it is not ready to work after 3 more hours, I am returning it.

You cannot make a business accept a return based on you spelling your user name wrong.

If this thread is resolved please mark is as resolved.

You solved my spelling issue. I may return the PS because of Windows 10. If I can downgrade it to Win 7, I may keep it.

This is my first thread and I can't find how to mark it resolved
