Links to Excel files on Desktop don't work

Recently I have found that the links I have posted on my desktop which are supposed to open various Excel files (and have done so for years) only open a blank Excel screen so that I have to go through the process of opening files manually. I have tried redoing the desktop links several times but always with the same result. Help!

Are you right-clicking an .xls or xlsx file and choosing Send to then Desktop (create shortcut)? It works fine for me.

Yes, I just did that but it just opened Excel, not the file.

I just tested it again on the checkregister.xls file and it opens Excel with the spreadsheet open in it.

I'm afraid it didn't work for me. I should add that all of my desktop links to Excel files worked fine until yesterday. No they all simply open Excel.
