Laptop and external screen issue

I am trying to display one thing on my laptop screen but something else on my tv. I have connected my laptop via HDMI to my TV. I have gone to display settings / rearrange your displays and clicked on detect but it finds nothing. It shows 1 I 2 . What am I doing wrong?
