I personally have zero trust in windows defender. It constantly scores very low detection rates. Just about any free AV is better.

If you do choose to use a 3rd party AV, make sure defenders real time protection is turned off.

Windows Defender works fine as long as you keep it upodated and use it along with the free versions of SuperAntiiSpyware and malwarebytes. Most non-MS AV software will slow your computer considerably.

Just use your brain when downloading software of allowing an unknown program execute something on your computer.

I have and use 8 computers at my home and am constantly on the internet and i haven't had a virus in several years. Occasionally a piece of malware will sneak in, but SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes takes care of those problems easily and quickly.

Yes, it is sufficient enough as a good anti-malware solution. Other anti-malware may not co-operate with the operating system as easily and integrate as well, and most paid anti-malware systems are not worth it in the end for the performance impact it has on your machine.

Remember, an anti-malware system can't protect against everything. Be sure to download software from the official source, read installers carefully for any junk software that may be installed (decline if possible), and do not download cracked software as these usually return as malware.
