Win 10 computer can see the XP machine and access shared files, like wise from the XP machine. I can remote control the XP computer using Desktop Connection, it works great. What I cannot do is remote control the Win 10 computer from the XP. File sharing and network discovery is setup on both. The network was established before Win 10, as the group is WORKGROUP. Too many devices to go through and change over to HomeGroup.

The XP computer is the professional version with Remote Desktop installed. I do not get any numerical error msgs to track down the problem. Any ideas what else I need to do or is this even possible. I have tried using the IP address and computer name but neither work.

No VPN setup.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
IS the Windows 10 computer home or pro?
Are the two computers involved on the same local LAN?

It is the HOME version. All computers are on the same LAN network.

Thanks for the reply.

I don't believe that any Home version of a Windows Operating System supports incoming RDC (Remote Desktop Connections) over RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol).
I believe they all include the Remote Desktop Client so they can run mstsc.exe to connect to another Windows machine through Remote Desktop, but I do not believe they have the necessary .dll files in place to support hosting an incoming Remote Desktop session. I'm pretty sure that, that requires Pro version or above.
Maybe something like Team Viewer might better support what you need to do. http://www.teamviewer.com/en-us/

Hi. I tried the TeamViewer. Now my computer is screwed up. Problem - "...configured identity is incorrect..". Cannot execute any system functions. Ran SFC scan and in the results I see many msgs about duplicate ownership in directory. I do not know what that means.
I created a new user using the cmd/dos window. It can execute system functions like the control panel but cannot run any apps. Based on my first experience with Teamviewer, I would not recommend it. Now trying to sort through the internet to find a non restore solution. Any thoughts. My Admin account has the same problem(s).

I can tell you without reservation that it certainly wasn't TeamViewer that "screwed up" your computer.
I have used it for years and am currently using it to help many friends and relatives with Windows 10, Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 computers.
What computer is "screwed up" the Windows 10 computer or the Windows XP computer?
Go into services and disable the TeamViewer Service and reboot and see if the problem persists.
hold the windows key and hit the R key and in the run dialog box type
services.msc
hit enter
scroll down to teamviewer, double click it, change the startup type to Disabled, reboot.
Use the Control Panel, Programs and Features applet to uninstall Team Viewer
OR
If it's the XP machine then use and and remove software.

It was the Win 10 computer that was messed up. I have been playing with many solutions trying to fix this problem. The last thing I did was hold down the F8 key while the computer booting. I had tried this earlier but it made no difference. This time the errors disappeared, so, I think things are fixed. I did create a restore point as a backup. Not really sure what happened as the XP was also acting up, freezing while controlling the Win 10 computer. I have not booted the XP machine yet. Wanted to get the Win 10 fixed first.

Thanks for your suggestions and help.

I cannot guess what the problem might have been.
I can only say the TeamViewer 11 is installed on my Windows 10 Pro 64 bit computer and has been since before it was a Windows 10 computer, when it was 8.1 running TeamViewer 9 and or 10 and the program has never had any negative impact on the operating system.
I tried googling your error but didn't find much "configured identity is incorrect" except some instances where the server service failed to start
