I have used AVG's free anti-virus for ten years with no problems. And I have used Windows Defender for years on Windows 8 with no problem. When I updated 7 to 10, AVG transferred with no problem.

But I decided to switch 10 over to Defender. And AVG wouldn't leave. There is no way to turn it off. I tried using the Security Center to shut off all AV protection and then turn on Defender. AVG fought back, and then my computer made me go through a routine to prove I wasn't a hacker.

I researched it on the web and learned that MS provides a free AV removal tool. As soon as it was deleted, Defender turned on automatically.

You should have gone to the AVG website and downloaded their uninstall tool. Always best to use the proper tool that is provided on the website of whichever AV you are using.
