File Explorer "Hangs"

For the past few months File Explorer "hangs" (freezes) when I attempt to perform any function (delete, move, copy, check properties, etc) on any selected file. I am using Windows 10 (Build 102400). When I launch File Explorer it comes up immediately and all panes in the window look perfectly normal.
But when attempting any function, the "you'll have to wait forever" blue ring comes up, and nothing else happens. A second right click of the mouse initiates the "not responding" message in the top line of the window, and still nothing else.
The programs just hangs in this state for about 15 minutes, after which the action select pull-down pane appears and you can then proceed to successfully carry out any normal file management function you may wish.
Has anyone got any helpful suggestions to help me overcome this time-consuming, frustrating bug? [Just another "undocumented feature" of this troubled operating system.]

Welcome to the forums Ian.
Maybe not a helpful suggestion, but see if you can update to the latest build, it could solve the problem.

Thank you davehc, for your quick reply. Sorry for the "dopey" question, but can you tell me how to get the latest Build please. [ my pc tells me that currently there are no new updates available - does the windows update system not necessarily deliver the latest build?]

The update system should deliver automatically. I cannot advise that you attempt a third party download. The update was an almost complete reinstall, and gave quite serious issues for some users. fwiw, it was a smooth process on the machines I have worked with.
But, right click the Start icon and "run" and type Winver.

You obviously know what you have, but, if the update was installed, you should see this.

Hi again davehc,
Sorry I have not returned sooner. Again, thanks for your help, however I now realise that your screen print (above) is for Win 10 PRO. On this particular laptop I am running home edition only. (Incidently, my other pc (running PRO) only just got the Build 10586.36 this morning. I guess we are at the bottom of the update list down here in Aussie!!)
Below is the winver of the laptop I am having trouble with.
Regards, Ian Kett

I suspect a problem with your updates! MS move in mysterious ways, but I don't think it should take that long to send to your part of the world. You are several, quite large, updates behind. Currently, since I last posted, we are on build 10586.63. Not sure, but I think that is at least three builds after your Home. I have no access to a Home release, but I would imagine the build numbers are the same.
Perhaps another Home user in the forum can confirm that?
