Failed to connect to windows services

Hi

This problem has just started and it is preventing me from getting Windows Updates and accessing my external hard drives. Any help would be appreciated but please bear in mind that I am not a computer wiz.

My immediate thoughts are.....
Try this
Right click the start button and choose Run and in the Run Dialog box type
rstrui
hit enter or click OK
Tick the radio button that says "Choose a different restore point"
Click Next
Check the box that says "Show more restore points"
See what you got and maybe choose one before "This problem has just started"
See if that helps.
