Excessive HD activity after startup or restart

At startup the HD operates at 100% for a long time. More than 10-15 minutes. Trying to open anything is frustrating until the drive settles down. It does this even if there is no network connection.

Would yo happen to be running Avast would you.
It could be antivirus, malware programs. Open task manager (Processes) and view what's hogging your HD You may want to check the startup tab too and disable run on startup unnecessary programs.

Here are some screenshots from the Task Manager. Most of the services are beyond me. I turned off all startups and restarted but as you can see the Disk is still going strong. These screen shots were taken about 10 minutes after restart. Disk.JPG Process.JPG Startup.JPG
