My first inclination is to suggest that you....
Put down the mouse and step away from the computer.
Once sufficiently clear of all furniture, do a little happy dance that your "wife's laptop" survived and you're not now in the dog house for blowing up her computer as a result of attempting an upgrade to Windows 10 (regardless of your good intentions). AND remember that no good deed goes unpunished.
Regarding the specific error, it looks like some problem exists either with the media you are using or perhaps with some peripherals that are plugged into the laptop.
NOTE: Some older laptops are just not well suited for upgrading to Windows 10, so....
Please check the manufacturer's website and see if they have any specific information with respect to the upgrade and that particular laptop. If they have any Windows 10 hardware drivers might be a good indicator.

I'd suggest acquiring the installation media in the form of an ISO.
The installation media can be obtained through either of these two resources.

Once you have the ISO, you can use ImgBurn to burn it to a DVD or Rufus to burn it to a USB ThumbDrive, either of which you can use to run "setup.exe" from within Windows 7 to perform the in-place upgrade.
