Well typically when you have an attachment the file attached is in a specific format. When you click on the attachment it opens the defaull application for that file type. Example .PDF (adobe Reader), XLSX (excel) and .DOC (word). Now that's is the attachment was actually downloaded as sometimes Email clients have setting not to allow attachments in email to be downloaded.
