Maybe. You would have to get media and a licence for 8.1. It is possible but I think not likely that some parts of your new machine's hardware have no 8.1 drivers.

  • Note that mainline support for 8.1 ends in January 2018.
You must really hate W10.

I'm getting used to it, but dislike the fact that I cannot control the Windows Updates. Thanks for your reply... No support after Jan 18... Guess I forget about switching back to 8 !! Have a nice day !!

Security support is until 2023.

If you set your W10 to a 'metered connection' you wont get the big updates...or so we are led to believe..

Yup.. Sometime today if get a chance. From what I was told there are 2 ways to do that... A registry "adjustment" which is long and tedious, and changing the settings through gpedit.msc. Trouble with gpedit is that is only on Windows 10 Pro units. I can give you the link for the registry hack if you want it.

go to setting network. click on your connection type ( ethernet or wifi)
click on the network name you are connected too

My example:

The you'll see a page with the properties of that connection and a switch to set the connection to metered.

This used to only work for Wifi connections but it works for both now since 1703.
