Running Windows 10 Pro Build 15063.296, CPU = i5-4590, RAM = 8GB DDR3-1600, Video Card on motherboard = Intel HD Graphics 4600. Video Driver = Intel 20.19.15.4531 (9/29/2016). Windows 10 newly installed on this machine.

The machine will be running properly, and all of a sudden, with no warning, the screen will become a mess of various flashing colors.

The only way to stop it (apparently) is to hold down the power button. Rebooting, it may be ok and run for days with no problem or it may have the problem immediately after signing in.

Thank you very much. I checked the website and found that the latest driver (3/30/2017) is 15.40.34.4624. I uninstalled the present driver (using the device manager), rebooted and fiound that the former driver 20.19.15.4531 was back.

I then attempted to install 15.40.34.4624. After extracting the file and attempting to execute it, i received the flollowing error message "The driver being installed is not validated for this computer ... Setup will exit". It suggested that I go to the Manufactures website. I did go to the website and found the latest driver (11/25/2015) is 10.18.15.4281.A02. I'm not sure I want to install such an old driver.

Also, after the error message from Intel memtioned above, they also gave a workaround to get their driver installed, warning that it might remove some of the manufaturers (Dell) functionality, to install from the zip file rather than the .exe file.

What is my best course?

While I encourage you to pursue the driver issue, I would add that......
IF you are possibly using an HDMI cable for the connection from your desktop to your monitor, you might consider looking into a replacement.
Sometimes a problem with cable shielding deterioration can cause similar issue.

No, no HDMI cable. Actually, it is attached via VGA. I realize analog is not the best way, but I have just purchased the machine, formatted the drive, and installed windows 10. I do intend to eventually go to a digital connection.

I have now installed the Intel 15.40.34.4624 manually (using the zipped driver download). Interestingly enough, the Device Manager lists the driver number as 20.19.15.4624. Apparently, only the last 4 digits count.

Sp far, so good. i've had no problems yet and I hope that the situation remains the same/
