I have 2010 HPelitebook 8540p. Cursor stuck at top of screen and cannot control it from touch pad so touchpad and buttons not working either.

The last thing I did that may have caused issues, was to click synapitics pointing device from list of icons in taskbar menu, and then unclicked the checkmark for "tap to click" that was checked.

There were other issues prior to that and disk was repaired on startup after I rebooted then.

I also sometimes now get window sayin windows common DLL stop working.

So I got my Apple mac mouse, reopen the synaptics pointing device and they "tap to click" option is now ghosted out, so cannot checkmark it.

This whole issue because touchpad left click button was too sensitive and I went to control panel to open mouse, but I could never get in because mouse was part of some network so I would cancel or or click X to get of the window and no matter what I did, I would get a windows icon and message"preparing to install", and round and round goes blue circle for half hour never ever installing anything.

Then I would cancel "preparting to install" and again blue circle would never stop going around while window states canceling.

I was given this HP two days ago, so dont know history but allow as working fine untill I had to force quit computer several times with it booting and being reparied by itself on bootup twice, once a day ago, then agin today because I forced quit via holding down on/off button.

Sounds like touchpad driver maybe corrupt. I dunno, again, last thing I did that may have been the cause was unclicking the checkmark for "tap to click" in synaptis icon via taskbar submenu of access or startup thingies.

Ok, so I ran Reimagerepair and they found issues and stated medum issue problems and wanted $49. to repair them. Instead of that I rebooted for third or 4th time since cursor error issue, and it now works and now when I open synapitics from task bar menu via right click the tap clicking is not ghosted out, and,

the now when I go to control panel > mouse or > keyboard they will open synnaptics as they should.

So all issues fixed, tho, will have to see if left click touchpad button is still too sensitive, so far so good.

win 10 pro 2017 is what I get when I right clik My PC > properties. Laptop is hand-me-down form step-son.

So far yesterday brierlfy and today, Ive not the original problem of too sensitie left click button. So shutting off computer during, what appeared to me to be fake install of someting related mouse and then haing it rebooted serverla times two of which it scanned and repaired itself may have resolved the two sensitive curso issue.

I has same issuw with my last two Toshibas but installling the Synatics PS/2 synaptics driver solve those issues on Toshibas. This HP has the Synatpics PS/2 criver or program also.

H,mm I do notice that I have not reapplie the "tap to click" feature so maybe my unchecking it is why the left button is not sensitive now.

This my first HP experience Eliteboo 8540p has much nicer feel keyboard than my last three Toshibas, but they were less expensive machines also. There was business model of this machine but I think this was consumer model. Not sure. $1100. new in 2010 if I recall correctly and now I see some of this model go for $1899.

My $125 Toshiba from Ebay was doing fine for me, once I tiook out the ribbon to CPU, cleaned the ports male and female then stuck back in, my keys worked perfectl as they should from then on.

So I have excellent backup maching. One little anoyance with this HP is the the G, H and B buittons are have truncated shape beause of what looks like a round peg/screw that probably holds computer top to base.

Wolfe, just noticed your link > pathways, so I followed that and saw Synaptic tocuhpad enhancements there and of course it is on.

Version 1709
Build 16299.192

My guess is that is close to latest update as my stepson is in IT as Citrex specialist and I believe he has thisHP set to do automatic updates. Took me a few years to feel good with MS PC's before I did auto updates.

Thx for your time and consideration of my issues. I'm leaving "tap to click" unchecked for now. Sttepson had it checkmarked. Ever once an awhile I have some info about PC's he doesnt know, that PS/2 was one he didnt know about a few years back.

But hey there are so many possible conflicts and computer issues out there, that no one knows all the answers. So I know he also uses the internet as his friend to solve problems.
