SSDs that boot if connected through SATA/USB adapter, hang in 'Verifying DMI Pool DATA' if connected by SATA. How to remedy ?

I have since replaced both the power supply and the motherboard, and can therefore speak of two different computers. In this second PC, SATA-connected drives are not even detected - if that was also happening in the first computer it would explain why booting does not happen FROM SATA CONNECTIONS. VERY mysterious. Booting and running from USB is fine.

The remedy turned out to be very easy. Resettting BIOS OPTIMAL DEFAULTS (but changing any IDEs back to AHCI) did the trick. The mystery is why that needed to be done. I wonder if an aging CMOS batttery could be the culprit ?
