I have tried to update my virus protection and add some programs but I am unable to because it asked for the admin. password. Have checked many sites for info but haven't been able to find a solution.

Hi blg,

Welcome to the Forum.

I'm assuming you have a single User account set up for this Windows 10 machine; if that is not the case let us know.

You may be able to get around this by temporarily turning of Smartscreen:
  • Press Windows key and X key together (or right-click on Start)
  • Select Control Panel
  • When the Control Panel opens assuming you are viewing it by Category click on System and Security

    Sample image

    cp1.png

  • Next click on Security and Maintenance

    Sample image

    cp2.png

  • Next click on Drop arrow to right of Security

    Sample image

    cp3.png

  • Next scroll down to Windows SmartScreen and click on Change settings

    Sample image

    cp4.png

  • Finally, in the window that pops up check the second option: Do not do anything then click OK

    Sample image

    cp5.png

Now try updating your security program or doing the other things you had trouble with.

Let us know if you have any success.

Don't forget to turn the SmartScreen on again when done.

It's possible that you're logged in as a standard user account. If you login as administrator, the system will not prompt you to enter password when changing system settings.

I followed the instructions and when I came to windows smartscreen and clicked change settings, the box popped up and said to continue, type administration password. Doesn't matter what I do I get the same message.

Hello:

I have Windows 10 and there is no SmartScreen in the given description that you have shared. Have they changed it?!
