SOLVED Black screen with cursor

I've had a new desktop for just over a month. Last week I found that when I switched on, after entering my pin, I get a black screen with only the mouse cursor showing. I can do control-alt-delete to get task manager working. Looking for this problem on the internet I found one of the solutions was to run explore.exe from task manager. Eventually my desktop appears at the same time as explore.exe but this takes 5+ minutes.

Can anybody help?

You might try updating or reinstalling the video driver..

Hi. Thanks. I checked the drivers and got a message saying they were up to date. Not sure how to get back to whatever the settings were before the problem. I don't have a restore point to go back to earlier than the problem. I may reinstall windows but not sure. Thanks for your reply, Saltgrass.
