I'm running as a second computer an old Amilo Li3710 updated some time ago from Win 7 to Win 10 22H2 and change of hdd to ssd. I was in the process of changing Bios Legacy to UEFI in order to make a bootable usb to try out Win 11 when the laptop switched off leaving a black screen and flashing cursor. I can get into the boot menu but the default repair and all other settings do not work. Other than getting another motherboard which I really don't want to do on a 15 year old laptop, I would appreciate any suggestions and advice on a way of resetting the system. Thanks.

All I can offer is a question about whether that old of a computer can support UEFI and the suggestion that it is possible remove all power and disassemble the computer to remove the CMOS battery for several minutes which should set the BIOS back to the factory default. Have to be extremely careful as the touchpad and keyboard may become unattached from the motherboard.

I've put Win11 on a Notebook from 2014 but any older even the 'tweaks' won't work, there's at least 4 things needed to be bypassed. After my experiment by having to bypass 2 things Microsoft tossed in 2 more requirements and it wouldn't have worked again.

One more question: Did you actually switch from Legacy to UEFI? I think there in lies your problem. Your drive does not seem to be setup to UEFI. That is why you have a blank screen and a flashing cursor because your computer is looking for the UEFI partition, which might not exist on your drive. If you turn it back to legacy, you should be able to boot again.

Thanks to you both for your suggestions. It switched as as It was about to convert to UEFI and is now stuck in the middle. I can get into Boot menu but not Bios. Oddly a Linux usb I made a while ago does boot in, but a Win10 usb I''ve just made won't. I didn't know if my Li1370 would download W11 but wanted to try it befofe upgrading on my Asus. I'm going to try a Win recovery usb as a final shot but I'll be surprised if I can rever it. IncidentallyThank yoou both I looked for the CMOS battery but couldn't find it by the motherboard and I'm not too happy about digging any deeper.

I’d start by doing a hard reset. Unplug the laptop, remove the battery (if possible), and hold the power button for about 30 seconds. Then plug it back in and try powering it up again. If it still shows a black screen, try connecting an external monitor or booting into Safe Mode to see if the issue is with the display.
