Windows Mail does not link AOL mail addresses. I worked on this problem for a few weeks.
Solution.
1. Sign on to AOL mail's web site (do not use AOL desktop app)
2. Export addresses to a .csv file
3. Launch Windows People
4. Import AOL .csv file
5. Edit addresses if needed
6. New email addresses. Open mail in windows mail. Left click on address in the email Click on open contacts
