I have an issue when trying to update a driver and receive an access denied warning. Could this be a user account security problem and how do I resolve it?

Possibly.... You could certainly test by activating the normally hidden / disabled / inactive "real" Administrator account.
From an elevated command prompt (Command Prompt (Admin) type
net user administrator /active:yes
hit enter
log off and log on as "the" administrator and see if that has any impact on your issue.

IT is also possible that some over zealous third party security suite is causing your issue.
IF you are running any such program you might try addressing it by.....
Making the appropriate adjustments within the program
Disabling the program (generally difficult and often in affective)
Uninstalling the program including the vendor specific proprietary removal program to remove all remnants (Google for it)
