How to Play DVDs in Windows 10

How to Play DVDs in Windows 10

Windows 10 no long comes with an out-of-the-box DVD player - if you wish to buy the official Windows DVD player then you'll need to pay a moderate sum on the app store. However, there is no need to pay when so many free alternatives exist.

The most popular free DVD player is VLC Media Player - it's an open source media player that has been available for many years. It's great at playing almost any file format that you can throw at it, without downloading loads of codec packs. This is our recommendation for a great all-rounder.

At the moment, it seems better than any of the alternate free DVD software available - but we will update the article as other software is developed.

To begin, download the VLC installation files from:

During installation, you may need to ensure that "discs playback" is checked.

Once installed, insert your DVD in to your PC, load VLC media player and then select Media > Open Disc.

It is worth noting that although there is a VLC app in the app store, it currently doesn't support playing DVDs - you need to use the desktop version linked to in this article.
